Almost one million photos added to Google Earth

Since today photos from Panoramio up to ID 13,760,000 are included in Google Earth, this means almost one million new photos added.

The date of the next update will be around October 24th and will include photos reviewed up to October 10th. However we are testing more frequent updates and maybe you will see your photos earlier in Google Earth. For the moment we are testing bi-weekly updates and gradually the delay will be reduced. Hopefully in few weeks we will have daily updates, so the last reviewed photos will take only one day to appear in Google Earth.

  1. Some of my photos selected for Google Earth under the magic number of 13,760,00 have been added and some haven't. Strange behavior.

  2. Selection/ review process need to be more tranperant and convincing. A quick redressal would also be welcomed. Upload may be lot quicker these days, as that the object of the Panoramio; is in't so?

  4. As a work in progress, blue dots v. grey squares doesn't move me. However, the deviation between what is marked for GE and what actually appears there; and what seems permanently unreviewed and what is rejected; does.

As this is my first experience of the upload cycle, greater frequency would be nice but not critical. The larger issues of system response and reliability concern me more.

Finally, the intent behind the GE visibility scoring standards leaves me mystified. Most surely, if one's photography tends in directions away from theme parks and Manhattan, only your friends are likely to find it.

  6. Given that GE and G-Maps are supported by the same sponsor, what is the delay between photo display in GE and GM?
Recently, after informing a colleague their image would shortly appear in GE, I was corrected. Some (disadvantaged) users can only access Panaramio postings via GM. What is my answer?

  7. As an enthusiastic browser of Google Earth and panoramio, I do not think such large amount of photos being added to google earth is a good thing. And it is definitely a bad thing due to the lack of overall quality of the photo base. I hardly can find one good quality photo after clicking for 100 times on blue dots in Sydney, good enough for me to save in my computer, surely no need to mention how may ny times I have to find a decent photo with balance composition, with suitably adjusted sharpness and colour tone, hardly could be find in the photo sea in google earth.

What I really think would be a good idea is Google Earth should raise a bit their standard of applying the photos in google earth not just from the 12 or so "rules" set out by them now, but also consider in terms of photographic and aesthetic technique. Google earth is not a place for them to share their travel moments taken by their poor handset camera, if they wanna do so they should post it in flickr or picassa. This is a place for pleasant browsing on the earth and definitely need a bit more quality of things...

  8. Unfortunately, Google Earth has attatched some of your lovely photos of San Terenzio to a small village called Terenzio in the province of Parma in Emilia Romania. This small village is in the middle of the mountains and not near the seashore at all. You may want to contact them about this error.

  11. Your picture in Cleveland NY is a picture of a city locale in Cleveland, Ohio... could you remove it please? Cleveland NY is a lovely little "Blink and you will miss it" village on the north shore of Oneida Lake. I will be happy to supply you with a photo if you would like. Thanks!
