A new way to Look Around

Look Around is a great way to explore an area within Panoramio. For those of you who haven't tried it yet, this feature allows you to jump between similar photos in the same location. When we find photos with such connections, a Look Around link appears in the photo page right below the photo.

By clicking on that link you are directed to the Look Around of that picture where you can navigate through all the overlapping pictures and have fun visiting a place or viewing a building.

Until now, natural navigation moves of the photo such as zooming and panning were not easy. Also while near by photos are often interesting, we only showed them if they visually matched.

Today we are thrilled with the launch of an improved Look Around which includes new features that make navigation much better:

  1. To see new photos, simply click or drag on any of the silver balls in the photo. This will transition you to a neighboring photo

  2. Drag anywhere on the photo if there are panning options, as seen by the silver balls with arrows along the sides

  3. Click on any of the pictures of the filmstrip on the top to navigate to both matching and nearby photos

We also made easier to see which photos have Look Around by putting a little icon below their thumbnail in the user page.

One the most amazing places I've visited in Europe is La Sagrada Família in Barcelona. Construction of the church started in 1882 and is still on-going, mostly because of the amazing amount of detail that is always being added. Click on the image below to really appreciate the intricate detail of this building.

Our Panoramio Community has a special section dedicated to Look Around where they share their favorites. Go to the Look Around section of our Panoramio forum to share your favorites and post your opinions about the ones there. Some cool places you can check are also the Louvre in Paris or the Red Square in Moscow. Please let us know in our Panoramio forum if you are now able to navigate the world a little better.

I found this feature in some of my Pano-friends in their gallery and i said, ohhh one day i will make some photos of mine be tagged with this feature, because i do not know how too do it.... have to research. But now just few hours ago... i found this in some of my photos in my gallery! already made for me? Ohhh my.. this is really a happy surprise!

My Congratulations to Panoramio Team! They do not sleep to do some more improvements for our convenience, you see! I salute! Keep it up. Thank you very much.

  4. [...] 5. @ francine: We do check all Panoramio photos automatically and if those photos meet a matching criteria with other photos we create a Look Around. This means that a Look Around may include photos from different Panoramio users. We are currently working on fine tuning the feature to give the best Look Around experience. Thanks for your feedback!

  8. Nice inovation, thank you, Team!

But... some bugs should be addressed:

    - pictures bigger then active screen area should be downsized (no need to scroll around to see whole picture)

    - some picture that are presented as part of look around feature (in mini gallery at top of screen) are not flagged as part of look around in user gallery pages pr single picture view.

    - Sometimes transition between pictures in mini-gallery is not possible by dragging/clicking in main picture. Only possibility to get further is to click thumb in mini gallery.

  9. Hi Daniel. Thank you much for the improved version of the "Look Around" and the indicator icon. Although our transition speeds here are not as fast as what we saw during presentation, it is still very nice :)

Thanks to new icon, I noticed one of my X-3D pair from NY, NY had Look Around. I am not sure if over ride is possible but perhaps this particular one should not be considered for Look Around , but it perhaps can be considered as the sample for development of 3D viewer for Panoramio :D

I truly appreciate the new "Look Around" icon displayed below each photo for which such function is available. A great idea and a great implementation, so thank you!

Please also consider introducing the "Commented" icon to indicate photos that have been commented. There is enough space for that. I understand that at present the comments can be found at the bottom (in Conversations), but visual indication of presence of comment below each commented photo would be great, too!

  13. Dear Panoramio team,

your new feature is fun to use - and the new icons below the images convinced me that you take the suggestions your users sometimes make in the respective forum.

    Good luck further on!

  14. I second Tomas Kohout' somment about the size of the images. I am using Opera 10.5, and for some reason the images seem to be displayed at about 5x zoom of the regular image which mens you do not see the whole image. You can not zoom out.

Other than that it seems to be a rewarding step forward.

  17. I found a new icon in some of my photos, after some study I realized that was a “look around” icon. This “look around” feature is really cool, but how does it work? Who did the hard works to match together all the related photos and create “look around” gallery? I believe that was a very time-consuming job. As panoramio user, can we assist the reviewer (or the man behind the scene) to match together some of our related photos and create “look around” gallery? For example, by adding in some reference no. into the description column of the related photos, to highlight the sequence of the photos to the reviewer.
