New Gamified Panoramio Contest

After hearing all your feedback on the Panoramio Geotagged Photo Contest, we have finally come up with a new version that we hope you will like.

The new version allows non Signed In users to browse in an easy and fast way all the photos submitted to the Contest in the 4 different categories: Scenery, Heritage, Travel and Unusual Location while it allows Signed In users to vote 1 photo of a randomly selected group of 10 photos. After Voting on a photo, a new set of 10 will be displayed and this way you can spend as many time as you want enjoying the cool photos submitted by our Panoramio users.

We wanted to keep the option to discuss with the photographer about a photo you may like. If you want to do so, just click on the large photo of a set and you will be directed to the photo page where you can leave a comment to the photographer.

Many thanks to Balázs for making this possible.

I hope you will like the feature and as always please leave us a comment with your thoughts so we can keep improving Panoramio for you.

P.S.: Before you ask... No, it is not an April’s Fool Joke :)

  2. Laughing a lot in the morning ...trying to think some and their thoughts about that...

Congratulations for a lot of work for this system which favors those who have a lot of hours available to play with the contest...

But the big problem of spams remains the "like" as it is now...

So I think nothing has changed if "Like" remains to be clear and it is more important from the contest as most of us care about popularity that has changed because of the spammers' "likes and favorites"...who think that by the way of putting "Likes and Favorites" win popularity and at the end it is true...Games of mind and you continue to play their game...
Have a nice month and a lovely spring...
    Greetings

  3. If the new voting system is not an April Fools joke I agree that it is against spamming but I will not take part in this due to prohibitive time requirements!

I believe you have sabotaged yourselves your own contest, not the users who will not support the new voting system!

The fact that most people would get bored looking for hours to vote for the best photos in no way guarantees that the photos which would collect a few votes would be necessarily the best!

But I feel liberated from the anxiety to vote all the photos of friends and I am glad that I have more time to browse over the globe and photos of places and not just friends'...

    Good touring friends, _Despina_

  5. One question. How many entries are received each month on average ?

  6. Better to call it ”Panoramio Photo Lottery”. Like this the new voting system would be described more accurately. :D

Bravo! for spam stopping effect, even if I think that the participation might decrease.

  7. Hi Everyone - if the contest has any chance to succeed, I suggest that the Panoramio team screen the contest photo! It just impossible to go over it one by one. Some of the contest entry are downright unimpressive and some shameless people have submitted pictures of themselves (you can check "unusual category" - its full of them). Also, the sort function should be updated daily to resequence photos which have garnered the most cumulative votes and shown first when opening the voting page. In this way, the most visually striking photos will be prioritise and the members will not have to go through, one by one, each voting page from start to finish. Save the trouble of frustatingly browsing for hours to just locate the best photos. My 2cents

  9. The new "gamified" facility is far too slow to load and then reload to the next set of entries ~ no one is going to waste the time necessary to persevere I suspect. If this can be significantly speeded up then it might be more interesting.
Well done for trying a new approach though :)

it is necessary to sharpen, details. Whatever are the photos?
    that they compete?

  16. @bretanya
EN: The photos than can be voted are the ones submitted the previous month. So during a given month all the photos have the same days to be displayed.

    @L
As the display of the photos is random and the randomization is computed in a way that we show all photos in a fair way to every user, this does not become a lottery because the photo with more votes will be the photo that being displayed the same amount of times as other photos have been voted.

    @All:
I understand that some of you like the new version and some of you do not like it. This is normal. What I know for sure is that half of the community hated badly the previous version, so we will try this new version for a while and as always we will listen again to your option to change and modify whatever is needed, despite I would like you to give it a try for a while before we see whether this was worth it or not. I will ask again in a month ;)

First of all we need to know the man and his previous projects and then the project that wich we will vote.

    ReplyDelete
  18. @ Gerard, then at least screen and remove all those portrait shots??? it is quite annoying. they are not exactly "scenery", "travel", "heritage" or "unusual" for that matter.

    ReplyDelete
  19. @L: It is possible that a user entered spam in the contest. In that case, you can report it to spam@panoramio.com and we will take care of it.
@natlidakis: The contest is to decide a best photo, not a best project or a best photographer. That is a good idea though for a future contest proposal and we will consider it.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Bravo! I find it more fair, a photo contest is to judge a beautiful image, not always encourage friends with Big L or YS in order to get plenty of votes . I think the quality of the contest will be better, enjoy to discover more horizon & photographers !

    ReplyDelete
  21. I think with the new system, the number of entries may out number the number of "dedicated" voters ~ in which case a winning photo may only have 6 or 7 votes.

Maybe it would be better to limit the number of votes: for example: users can shortlist as many photos as they like during the first half of the month (the usual way), and then vote for up to 10 shortlisted shots per category during the second half of the month. It wont stop spam, but the spammers with the poor shots will not win.

At my house in Greece, I have a collection of my own photographs from 1961 until today, all in digital format, are about 1TB.
Can you ask someone to vote one of them?
So, the most Panoramio users have the same feeling today.

  23. Just for the heck of it I spend 2 1/2 hours trying to vote for a friend's photo that I knew was in the contest. Result:

    1. I never found the photo!!!!
    2. Several photos were displayed again and again (I counted one that came up 12!!! times)
    3. I got sick of watching at the monitor for so long.
    4. I will not bother with voting any more since I can't find the photos I want to vote.

The team that made the changes saw the tree but missed the hole forest.

We do NOT spend our lifes in front of a PC guys!!!

  24. The New Panoramio voting system has both good and bad things
Mostly it is good, because there were a minority people always or usually wining the prize just because they had a lot of friends on panoramio voting on their photos or they had a plenty of time spending on visiting the others photo and sending comments like: "hey..i Like and Voted for your amazing photo ;)" ..so the other user sees this comments and votes for that guy!
i have seen many masterpiece photos with only 3 likes and probably votes..just because they didn't have a lot of friends/favorite Photographers or didnt have much time to go and visit others gallery
i know many of those using this kinds of tricks to win the prize, wont like the new voting system
so we're having much more fair contest this month even if the first prize has only 12 votes!
The bad thing is i have problem loading the pages with contest entry sometimes it loads very slow or i have to click on the "Vote" button many times..also some users may have go and update their flash player just to see the photos in the current contest
Second thing is that we can only vote for one photo per page
Because the photos are shown randomly! it happened that i saw 4 incredible photos and i wanted to vote for each one one of them and i couldnt..while it happened that in a page there were no interesting photo to vote, not fair right?!!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I do welcome this change as it looks lot better than previous contest as I don't get mails that some one left a comment saying I have voted for me. A big relief indeed.

On the negative side there seems to be lack of motivation to vote it. If I am contesting why should vote some one else photo? that it self reduces the chance of winning as some one is not going to vote for me for sure(Anyway I have already voted one photo. I checked the photos which I have send it for the competition. But I do see low increase of the statistics. Does it mean that there is no motition to see my photos in the contest or this contest photos statistics will not be added to the statitics? Also I do wonder if you could increase the number of photos in the contest to see the best ones. May be 24 or 100 is ok as I have 20 inch LED monitor where I have plenty of space to see the good photo.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I understand that this new format becomes a more fair competition, but it requires way too much time to participate. I have no interest in seeing people's business cards, self portraits or grandchildren, which all need to be plowed through, just like the former contest. I also see many repeat photos, sometimes on one page after another. It would be nice to have a "save for 2nd viewing" button to isolate good photos which you could review and vote on later. If this format stays, I think the thumbnail photos on the left, need to be larger for previewing. Going through each & every one is just not possible!

  28. These new changes are weird and not very well studied, indeed there were a lot of work done to reach such outcome BUT I found that what Panoramio technical team did is a total surrender to the spammers; they pushed the team to make radical changes that will annoy the users instead of fighting the spammers themselves!!!
this new system of voting is bad for many reasons:

    1. you spend hours to find a good photo
    2. people with slow connection will not be happy with this new idea
    3. If you liked a photo in some gallery, don't bother yourself to find it in the contest because most probably you won't find it
    4. this is a time consuming procedure that we will not lose our time in voting.. for me i am a master II researcher and I barely find time to upload my photos and tag them, and in break I vote for photos I like of friends and other people, now with this new system I will not bother myself to check for a needle in nonillions of hay.
    5. instead of focusing on enhancing the system like making new options for notifications and better social communications they were just interested in fighting those spammers, why they don't work on panoramio to make it like facebook? this idea will be certainly successful! like i have friends on panoramio that I communicate with them more than some friends on facebook itself!!!

  29. We had two reasons to change voting system:
    - We wanted to fight with the contest spammers. If Panoramio users cannot vote directly then the spammers lose their motivation to comment other photos with spam content.
    - The second reason is to decrease the dominance of the social connections in the contest results, since the contest is about to find the best photos. The previous system made the contest totally unbalanced for users with a lot of friends in Panoramio. For example, a lot of contest photos got less than one tenth page views in the contest period as many votes got the winner photos. This made very hard to join to the contest for beginner Panoramio users. If you see a good photo on your friend's photo page, you can use YS or like, but not vote for it. Voting for a specific photo is hard, and intentionally hard. In my opinion, the new contest is more fair than the old one, and I'm really very excited about the next winners.

Of course, we will revise the system at the end of the month, and if it is necessary we will change it.

    ReplyDelete
  30. @deba

The social connections was one of the things that bothered me alot when I first came to Panoramio.
But there are numerous ways to "fight" it whithout makeing it dificult for people to vote. First you can disable the email notification for new photos and limit the favourite photographers that each user can have to say 30 or 50. No more any social bias.

"Voting for a specific photo is hard"
Well, I kind of like to vote for the photos I want and not the photos the server wants me to vote!!!

For my self I'm not excited at all to see the next winners win with 5 or 6 votes from millions of users.

    Best regards, Alex.

  31. The project is good but I think I have the chance to try and vote for a photo more quickly, not to mention that there are many pictures of participants who actually do not care to compete even if they have a nice picture, just for the ease of participating, the server I have the chance to vote so many beautiful photos but insignificant for the competition by those who promote
I believe the system to see the photos precenente participants were better and faster and I was that the group was going to choose and vote and already 1 / 3 of participants
not interested in voting, just for the ease of participation.

I hope I can still find the desire to find new beautiful photos and to be able to vote correctly without thinking of wasting time with what I am proposing the server maybe useless or non-GE

    a cordial greeting, franco

  32. Is there any known "critical mass" of reviewed contests sets - in order to keep the contest running in well defined manner?

Then there can be recommendation: for each photo submitted to certain contest category, please review 2 (5, 10, 15, 30...) sets in this category. It sounds fair.

I don't think that reviewing some minimal count of contest sets should be mandatory, but... without user-reviewers votes contest is going to die.

    ReplyDelete
  33. hi panoramio team, whatever the changes are going to be in future, just keep the contest voting system fair
I rather not to get any vote from my friends but to be sure that the most deserved photo will get the prize (the thing that unfortunately didn't happened in many contests!)
    I have some suggestions:
    1. don't use Adobe flash to show contest entry, because that slows down the loading process for users having slow connection, this causes less users to come and vote
    2. this is not interesting that we are allowed to vote for only one photo per page, because I may want to vote for 2 perfect shoted photos and by voting on one of the shown photos I'm not gonna see the other photo anymore and it really sucks!
    3. in order to prevent the inappropriate photos being shown in the contest, I extremely suggest that you accept the photos that are "selected for Google earth" to be shown in contest
this way you don't need to review every photo again
thanks to panoramio team for trying to have a better panoramio!

  34. As all the people knows, under the old system Tom, competitor, voted the photos of Dick that he liked, but, because so doing  favored the opponent, communicated it in a comment, counting on fair play of Dick, who, for not take avantage like a profiteer, generally  returned the courtesy to Tom. Equal and a draw.

Under the new system, Tom, even though finds a way to vote for the photo of Dick that he likes, which is a feat unlikely, knows in advance that Dick, though it would, almost certainly will not return the courtesy. So Tom, although  finding the photo (very difficult), will not vote, because he has not so stupid. Knowing this, he will avoid even looking for the pics.
Yes, he may vote for images that are randomly chosen by the software, but knows that, if he does, he hurts himself  with his own hands. So, he will do not it.

So much for those who are interested in the contest. As for those that did not interest, probably this people will vote even less than before, because it's  more work  going and searching for photos of the participants than clicking on the golden cup.

Moral: this kind of contest is dead.

    -------------- REQUIESCAT IN PACE --------------

PS Photos are so badly mixed by the software that I am not  found the mine; others instead I've seen them several times. Wonder of the random. The software should resubmit a photo only after it has presented all the others.

  35. I know that some people might think that new voting systems makes users to have fear for voting the other user's photos
but I myself have participated with 5 photos in scenery and travel category
    so I don't see any reason not to vote for other 2 category photos;
and still it happens that I get comments from other users saying that they like and voted my photo
so the contest is not completely dead!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Well... now it seems that we have a real contest! I hope that the best pictures will appear with more votes.

  38. Well I think I like it. Maybe I'll put some photos to the contest next month :)) but …

I think that the thumbnails could be a little bit bigger.

I also believe that it would be interesting to put more than 10 photos in the same group, occupying more free space that is available on the same page.

It would be desirable to show the total number of photos that were submitted in each category.

I wonder if there is some special function used to calculate random photos that will appear? Because there are a couple of photos that I saw three times in only 5 minutes, in the same context category. I think there could be thousands of photos submitted to the context. As I know the probability rules, it should be almost impossible to achieve, using a simple RND function ...

Finally, I would like to add, because I think it would be interesting. At the end of the month, reduce the number of photos for which to vote.

    ReplyDelete
  39. What can I say about this contest... Among the others, its very strange that some photos pop up 2 or 3 times in 5 minutes...:-(

    ReplyDelete
  40. We have just released a new iteration that should make the visualization of new photos after voting much faster. (You should not see any latency while loading photos). I hope you like it.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Much better now Gerard!

I ran the voting pages for a while and I must admit the procedure is faster, the sets show better photos and I did not notice any repeatings! Well done for this step forwards!

Still, I would like to have the information of how many hours should I have to spend to look at all the participants in order to decide myself which ones to vote for, out of thousands! If in the next Miss Universe pageant the participants are 34 but only, lets say 26 show up on the cat walk, how would the votes and the results of the contest should be considered fair then? I am sure you understand my point here and I really would like to know your thoughts about it!

P.S. I. I would appreciate a backspace button to avoid missing a good set of photos when clicking fast!

P.S. II. I would like to have the opportunity to vote for more than one photos per set of 10!

P.S. III. I would like the contestants to be only photos selected for G.E. (not self portraits, pets, business cards etc.)

Please ease our lives in this pleasant community and do not make it difficult for common users in the name of attacking spammers! Better programming I believe would help!

    Have a nice evening, _Despina_

  43. What I like about the new system is it definitely stops spamming, which increases the chance that the best photo wins. What I like even more is (and what is essential for users to understand) that it is not their individual voting that will decide the result, but the combined voting of many Pano-users. Voting a few pages or voting 50 pages doesn't make a real difference, since you don't know how many other voters there will be, you don't know how many entries there are, and whether that one unique shot will be in the random selection you were presented with. So all you should do is accept the fact you are part of a greater community that decides the winner by their combined votes, and put in your own votes, few or many. It is hard for modern people to surrender their individual importance to a group effort, but that is exactly why I applaud the team for coming up with this new voting model! Great job!!

    ReplyDelete
  44. ...some small technical comments: the placement of the 'vote for this photo' button and/or 'get more photo's' button could be improved. The 'vote' button is in exactly the spot where you would expect a 'Next'- button. I find no photo to vote for, and want the next page. I click bottom right, and hey, I've just voted.
When browsing the 10 photos I click the 10 thumbnails one by one, ending bottom left, find nothing to vote, and have to move to top right to get the next 10.
When browsing the 10 photo's in the slideshow manner I click the button for next photo, click all ten, but on the last photo there is no button. Since I didn't keep the count I just click, and get sent to the photo page of the 10th photo.
Suggestions: make the Vote button more different from the 'Get next 10' button,
Place the 'Get next 10' button right below the 10 thumbnails, or in the place where the Vote button is now.
Let the 'next' button in the slideshow jump back to photo nr 1 in the current set of 10.

  45. I agree with Jeroen in many things ...
I would like to know and I suppose everybody does the same :"How many photos are competing in each category" just to know how much we have to try...to see them all....
I know by this way the comments dwindled ...It pleases you ...But when all the users are tortured because some spammers are playing with the comments ...it is unfair...
The system hangs ...I am too tired of seeing the man who is aiming at me with his gun ... a camel with the face stuck at the lens ... the
sumo wrestler...too bad photographs which do not have any relation with the purpose of the contest ..good photographs of flowers and other things... good but not for this contest...It is so unfair for the right photographs for this contest not to be seen as they should...

It would be better if only one category existed...and the user to be able to submit only one photo in the contest...

The numbers of the winners should remain same number in total ...depending on the votes received and not of the likes and all the rest...

The total number of the participants has to be known ...in order to know how many photos we have to see...

The pages of contest's photos to be numbered so we would be able to go from page to page till the end...or when we open again the page to be able to go to see the pages that we have not seen...

The miniatures are better to be in a full page (as at the previous contests) and when we click on them to open for vote...for us to be less tortured...

You must think very seriously that the "Like" in Panoramio is not the same as it is in the Facebook...In facebook this doesn't increase the popularity...but in Panoramio is different as the "Like" increases the popularity and if you want to avoid the spammers you have to change the word as it was before...because
when we write in a photo it means that we like the photo but not always so much to put it in the "Best of" panoramio...Make the "Like" to be invisible...and the spammers would be less...

Will the likes count in relation with the votes for the winners this month??

How may we think that the contest is fair when all the photographs don't come out with the same frequency???...as we see some of them many many times (so they have advantage) and others which we know that they are in the contest don't appear at all???...

If the contest was fair I would sign it with pleasure...as at the previous months I was visiting the pages of the competition... voting unknown users to me, users with beautiful pictures ..

If you do not hear our voice ... then why you ask about our opinion?

    Sorry for the long text....

With respect to everybody who cares about this site...

  46. First thanks to panoramio team for making the contest page load much faster
    @Sylvietsak:
if the pages of the contest had numbers with it, everybody would tell the others that in which pages are his photos..so his friends would go and vote on those photos..unfair Right?!
I didn't understand what was in the previous contest that made you think that was fair and this one is unfair!...if you are saying about showing the repetitive photos..i have to say it was a problem that already existed in the previous contest too.
And why would the "Like" stat disappear?
I also wanted it to be possible to know how many votes have my photos received during contest so far...because this will be very exiting
I think that everybody would like to know at the end of the contest, how many votes have each one of the 28 photos received
we would be appreciated if you make this possible for us

Do you think that they have changed a lot by this system?...The friends always search for the photos of their friends...and sometimes they vote some others too...the only thing that has changed is the time of voting...and the comments that became rare because everybody search to find the photos those which is interesting to vote:-(

I hate lies in my life...

  49. to meghdad89...

If you want to comment against some others comments, you have to comment for all and not to choose some phrase of it... Its not fair...:-(

  50. Well, if you look at the previous posts you can see that many users saying "why should they vote on others photos when it is almost impossible to have their votes back! ..the way of receiving votes in previous contests was "one votes for everybody...everybody votes for one..so this way, that one gets the prize " if its what you may call it fair
and even if I may only vote for other categories and other user photos that I don't know them...it is much more fair than to vote for only my friends or only for the reason to get votes from others
in order to better understanding my point,I give you an example: if I be somebody who had participated in contest with one very beautiful shot but I also be some busy guy and don't have much time for visiting others and probably do spaming,
do you think that way I had any chance to win the prize? Absolutely NO
    To Georgios:
hi, well I'm just giving my opinions, and I won't say anything against others comments without telling the reason
if I have chosen special phrase of someone's post , it was because I was agree with the other parts of Sylvietsak's post that I didn't mention
just in case I have to say I will not get angry if someone says something against my opinions by giving the reason ... because we want better panoramio for everyone

  51. I do not participate in the contest but vote.
If this is the new voting system must be modified:

    1. Check that the pictures shown are consistent with the category;
    2. No macro, portraits, dogs, cats, children, single flowers, surreptitious advertising,
    etc.;
    3. Opportunity to vote for more photos per page, because it's impossible to find it early.

The pictures are many and nearly impossible to see them all, the system should also ensure that the random choice was smart: do not allow the same photo of recurrence after two pages. This slows further the wait in front of the PC.
I'm not sure that this will be the best way to vote on photos.
The friends will vote only ever photos of friends.
Personally, I vote the best photos but also the photos of my friends.
This no one can prevent it!
    Regards

  52. After 4 hours I had enough .... I have 4 hours dug ONLY in the category landscape in the hope the border to find and to see all photos! ... but no, there was no end. It would be better if we knew how many pages there are in each category. 200, 2000 20000 or 2 million pages, so that we decide whether we continue or not?
I had enough to see the same photos were 8-10 - 15 or more times and I had enough to see happy people and their family,
their clan, their siblings, their own admiration, and their narcissism and I had enough of restaurants,
billboards, house mock-ups, flowers dogs and portraits. For the few good or very good photos(a handful),
who are participating in the competition is the invested time too much and sade! In addition there are too many photos.
It would be better if the number of pictures is reduced. 1(-2) photo(s) per users is enough and only photos which are selected by GE. It would be better if we had the possibility to assess the photos with a scale of 1-10,
instead of just the "vote". And very well could also be an anti-vote button, for the very bad photos of the competition ....

  54. Without the introduction of the new changes to the contest which has proved, so far, to be an enlightenment, the contest days were doomed!

Gone have the vote chasers, by and large..It is now proved that vote chasing has been circumvented!

No more am I seeing much of the "vote, like and favourite" brigade! My photos are now receiving interesting and reflective comment from many more brilliant photographers whose galleries are a delight to visit.

I feel at ease, knowing that many of my visitors, of whom I have many, are expressing their opinions openly with feeling and passion..A far cry from the events leading up to the change!

Obviously, there are drawbacks and a little fine tuning will be required, but please, let's give it a chance to work!

In closing, I feel already that Panoramio has been returned to its former roll of being the number one photo sharing site, which must be its primary roll..

The contests in their previous form were having a negative impact on the ordinary guy who was quickly losing any interest in a discredited and grossly unfair voting system, and lets be honest here, the resulting winners could not rightfully claim to have entered the best photo!

Most of the winners could, of course, claim to be the most prolific posters of contest spam! and that is the simple and indisputable truth!

We should all agree to put these negative issues behind us, lets us all strive to repair the shaky relationships that brought so many of us into conflict..This is all about sharing photos and disputes should not be permitted to weaken the strength of the

  55. Two important remarks, which can make Panoramio Contest to be sensible and much easier to vote by reducing quantity of photos:

    1. Only photos choosed to Google Earth can participate in Contest - this change should not be very complex.

    2. People or application (I do not know how does it work) responsible for choosing photos to Google Earth shpuld be more carefully and reject potos of a very bad quality.

  56. though this new voting system seems to be more fair , everyone knows that the amount of votes each photo receives has decreased incredibly
so the number of votes earned by first prize may be 10 or less!!
in another hand there are many photos, maybe 60 of them that earned the same number of votes for example only 3 or 4 votes and they all deserve to be at least Honorable mention
so here is the problem : what is panoramio going to do with this photos? announce all of those 50 photos as honorable mentions?!
this is a problem that you guys should really think about before it happens!

    to dear Nelly:
I agree with most of your good suggestions but I disagree with the idea of putting an Anti-vote button
Reason: many of the users may antivote for other photos, specially for the best photos in every page !! WHY? ..because those photos would have less chance to win the prize ...if you're not believing me , think of why the number of voters has been decreased so much?! ;-)

anyway , I had a suggestion for future contests...in order to decrease the number of photos participating in contest, ..since we have only 4 categories, allow only 4 photos per user to participate ...1 less photo means about one thousand less photos we have to see in contest

  57. I have two suggestions:
    1. A feedback of my own entries. How many votes have my photos received.
    2. A "period of probation" for new entries. If a entry gets too less votes per an amount of appearances, it will not show up again.
