Easy and fast: The new Panoramio photo uploader

Do you dream of a day when you can get started mapping and editing the titles, tags and comments for your photos while they’re being uploaded instead of waiting for all images to be imported? Have you ever wanted a mapping interface that would enable you to easily map all your photos on a single map, with an intuitive and modern design? Or would you like the ability to easily upload your photos from Picasa Web Albums and Google+ into Panoramio, and see them featured in the “Photos” layer of Google Earth, Google Maps, and other Google properties?

Today the Panoramio team is announcing a new uploader tool that makes all these things possible. This new uploader makes importing your favorite pictures into Panoramio faster than ever. Now you can easily tag and add titles and comments while your photos are uploading - all at the same time. In addition, viewing your photos on the map will help you remember where they were taken, and sharing them through Panoramio will enable visitors all over the world to enjoy your shots!

Panoramio photo uploader: Photo picker where importing from Picasa or Google+

Panoramio photo uploader: Editing title and adding tags or comments while photos are uploading.

Panoramio photo uploader: New map view enables you to drag and drop your photos to the location they were taken.

When designing this new uploader, our goal was to make the process of sharing photos as seamless as possible for our millions of users. Let us know what you think of the new tool in the Panoramio Forum or visit our Help Center to learn more about uploading photos to Panoramio.

  1. This is a great start. As an long time Panoramio user and a fan of G+ as well, I have to observe that next it would be great to see further integration of Panoramio and G+, where existing Panoramio users could link their two accounts, and have past, current and future interaction on Panoramio smoothly transferred onto G+. G+ could gain millions of photos and billions of interactions to instantly add geotagged value into both personalized and traditional Google searches, a big added value for Google to deliver.

Tighter integration would also effectively add group functionality to G+, and interactions in groups give the content greater relevance to searches and greater persistence as people search for images from a given boundary area such as a specific park, or taken with a particular photography method.

Google would also gain a much more clear picture of which photographers contribute the most compelling content to Google across its various image and interaction platforms, improving the and search rankings and the relevance of content delivered as results in searches.

Google has a lot of valuable content and interaction information from years of Panoramio operation and presentation of images on Google Earth; there's no need or to discard or ignore it.

Start to expose Panoramio photos and their comments and number of views on G+, and that will create a flood of photographers wanting to present their content as well. one way to do this might be enable Panoramio users to create a new share onto G+ which would start with comments coming over with the image (screen names linking back to Panoramio), existing likes being translated into +1s (and favorites and views being new categories of information to track, measure and display on G+).

  3. Easy (yes), fast (no!)
Thanks to all of you for your fantastic job !
Here are my comments after one day-experience with the new uploader :

    1. It doesn't copy the file (title) info included in the description file. It has to be done manually (in other words, twice)=> slower.
    2. For a huge list of tags : (not for the repetitive tags, e.g. : year, city, country..., but for the customized one's : Why not inserting a box (like the current one for the title, in order, for the user, to copy and past their customized list, for each picture?
    3. Automatic entry missing (localisation/search box)=>slower
    4. Identical positional refused. It has be changed afterwards. =>slower
    5. Could we have the possiblity of selecting a group of images for the same localisation rather than the current one-by-one ?

    That's all for the moment.

Again, tons of thanks ! ^-^
    Have a great day,

  4. Hi Magda,
(Please check my replies inline, but in any case, I will go to the forum to address them)

    1. It doesn't copy the file (title) info included in the description file. It has to be done manually (in other words, twice)=> slower.

    >> That is done consciously. We did not want to have users accepting private titles by mistake. We still show that as we have now smaller thumbnails in the list so you may want guidance on what you are doing, but that is it. And no it is not slower, as before we did not copy file names in titles either, so let's say: same speed ;)

    2. For a huge list of tags : (not for the repetitive tags, e.g. : year, city, country..., but for the customized one's : Why not inserting a box (like the current one for the title, in order, for the user, to copy and past their customized list, for each picture?

    >> You have that box at the end of the tag dialog. We may have a usability concern here as you could obviously not find it. We will review this, and maybe have that box on the top.

    3. Automatic entry missing (localisation/search box)=>slower

    >> Can you please elaborate further?

    4. Identical positional refused. It has be changed afterwards. =>slower
    5. Could we have the possiblity of selecting a group of images for the same localisation rather than the current one-by-one ?

    >> I see the use case for entering multiple photos in the same lat-long, but that would lead in general in wrong geo-positioning of photos so I am initially not excited about this, but we will definitely discuss it within the team.

Thanks a million for your notes!

  5. ¡Hola Gerard!,
Thank you for your prompt reply. Kindly see the following replies to your arguments/questions :

    1. It doesn't copy the file (title) info included in the description file. It has to be done manually (in other words, twice)=> slower.

    >> That is done consciously. We did not want to have users accepting private titles by mistake. We still show that as we have now smaller thumbnails in the list so you may want guidance on what you are doing, but

that is it. And no it is not slower, as before we did not copy file names in titles either, so let's say: same speed ;)>>

►► Sorry Gerard, but the former uploader does read and copy the "File’s title“ mentionned in the properties (and not the file’s name : *.jpg). => still slower. ;)◄◄

    2. For a huge list of tags : (not for the repetitive tags, e.g. : year, city, country..., but for the customized one's : Why not inserting a box (like the current one for the title, in order, for the user, to copy and past their

    customized list, for each picture?

    >> You have that box at the end of the tag dialog. We may have a usability concern here as you could obviously not find it. We will review this, and maybe have that box on the top.

    >>You have that box at the end of the tag dialog. ...>>

►►What I can see and the end of the tag dialog (right column) is :“Create a tag“. Instead, I’d like to find (like in the former uploader, a box allowing the copy-paste of my list „y“ of tags for a picture „y“ under each

thumbnail [you have it done for the title above the thumbnail] and not looking for or create a new tag in the general tag list.◄◄

    3. Automatic entry missing (localisation/search box)=>slower

    >> Can you please elaborate further?
    Can you please elaborate further?

►►Sure ! Always using the former uploader as an example (sorry about that, but…) : When you click in the box and enter the first letters of the localisation, a suggestion appears, like in any other search engine. In

other words, one doesn’t need to type the full name of the place and just select amongst the previous entries. ◄◄

    4. Identical positional refused. It has be changed afterwards. =>slower.
    5. Could we have the possiblity of selecting a group of images for the same localisation rather than the current one-by-one ?

    >> I see the use case for entering multiple photos in the same lat-long, but that would lead in general in wrong geo-positioning of photos so I am initially not excited about this, but we will definitely discuss it within the

    team.

    >>..but that would lead in general in wrong geo-positioning…>>

►►Why leading in wrong geo-positioning if several pictures are taken from the same lat-long ? On the contrary, I had to "lie“ and entered wrong positions to complete the uploading and had to insert the correct the

    lat-long afterwards. =>> slower !! [lo siento mucho, pero...];))◄◄

    >>Thanks a million for your notes!

►►Thanks a billion for your availability, Gerard.
    Most grateful,
    Yours sincerely,
    Magda

  9. Hi,
i think is much easier than the old uploader .
the great thing is, this new uploader giving opportunity to upload many photos in one go doing this operation is great when you have one album for one place. without needing to repeat the work every 10 photos like before !!!! and may forget which the one been added since i usually rename my photo. adding tag is now easier .

hope this great work can be extend to groups upload photo by (limited the number of photos that member can add, regard to group rules ) this will be less work for mod.& Owner to keep group stander .

at the end thanks for the effort you give to all members.
    best regard ,

  11. First of all a big thank you! I am an "old" Panoramio user, one of the italian translators... now I have less time, but I still do contribute a lot of photos.
I suggested a long time ago such a feature, and I am now most satisfied.
I still would endorse a direct upload from Picasa. I geoposition (when necessary), tag and title my photos in Picasa.
The way I had found until now was to upload them to Picasa Web albums, open each one of them in a separate browser window, and click for every one on the button "Transfer to Panoramio". And at the end I delete the Picasa Web Album :-(

Compared to this, the new uploader does it better and faster... but one thing (at least by me) does not work, namely the tags of Picasa Web Album are NOT automatically transferred in Panoramio. Of course I can type or select them in the list of suggested tags... so it is not a big issue.

But please consider: why not simply a Picasa Button "Upload to Panoramio"? If necessary, with a bandwith limitation to avoid "mass uploads", ok!

Anyway thanks a lot and keep up the good work!
Best regards - Ciao a tutti
    Claudio

  13. Thank you for Panaramio. I am not sure that this new uploader is faster. I do like the idea of tagging by typing in the words as I think that is easier than creating a list and then having to scroll the list to tag. It seems slower to me than it did in the past but I think that with time it will get better.
I have an additional question or two. Is Panaramio only for photos of the world or is art acceptable (of course art that is not in the public is not Geo-tagged). I am not sure how Panaramio looks at the Portfolio of my photos, and Google Earth. Is this venue for only photos. What would you recommend for art.
Also, it would be nice if we could arrange our photos because some photos may be out of position in relationship to the upload rather than intended presentation value. I have a lot of photos that I haven't published and I find that I do not have the photos that I have posted in the order that I would prefer if I was setting it up as an album (Most of my current published shots are of San Diego or Southern California). Best to you all and thank you again for the great site.
